Kimolos

A day excursion from Milos to Kimolos

Kimolos (Greek: Κίμωλος) is an island of the group of Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, located near Milos. It is considered as a middle class rural island. It is not at tourist hotspot and, therefore, the ferry connection is sometimes bad. The name comes from Kimolos, the first resident of the island, according to the legend. Echinousa is another recorded ancient name, probably because of the presence of the snake Echidna (viper) being common even today on the island. Kimolos has been a battlefield between ancient Athens, the ruler of the island, and Sparta, the ruler of Milos.

The standard of living is improving since the 1990s when tourist development began. The population, however, decreases and no more than 600 residents, mostly pensioners, are left during winter. The underage population is less than 100 according to the school records. Most of the working population is involved with the elementary tourist industry, hotels and restaurants, in combination with some agricultural activities in winter time.
