Milos 4

Milos of Venus part 4 The pirates' port
a bit of history written on the rock

Bentonite, perlite, pozzolana, kaolin are actively collected in Milos and sold all over the world. In the past, baryte, sulfur, millstones and gypsum were also mined. In ancient times the alum of Milos was reckoned next to that of Egypt. The Melian earth was employed as a pigment by ancient artists. Orange, olive, cypress, tamarisk, juniper and arbutus trees grow throughout the island, which, however, is too dry to have any profusion of vegetation. Vines, cotton and barley are the main crops.

Chora counted up to 5000 people in the 17th century. It had two-storied houses and 17 churches. The feudal society of the Venetians was a capitalistic, urban commercial society with a high standard of living. The Turks dominated Milos in 1699. The buccaneers were thrown out. Muslim pirates began to raid the island. They were not as kind as the pirates before them. They slaughtered, raped, destroyed and stole crops. They kidnapped people for their ships and for slave trade.
